When he convinced Ageloff to move to Mexico City, the spy used her ties to Trotsky to gain access to the compound and earn his trust. In 1922 he was appointed general secretary of the Bolshevik party with the help of Lenin. Suddenly, Jacson pulled out a pickaxe with a shortened handle from inside his raincoat and buried its sharp steel tip in Trotskys skull. After Lenin died in January 1924, the question arose immediately about who would be the next leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Thanks to Stalin, Trotskyism soon became a term of opprobrium for elitism, factionalism, and a lack of connectedness to the masses of workers and peasants. In 1922, Lenin, appreciating his organizational talents, chose Stalin for the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party. On that day, Lenin, after being in hiding for three and a half months, appeared in the Smolny and from there personally directed the fight. On April 21, 1946, two political parties united, creating a single, dominant party in what became East Germany. Junior commanders were less fortunate. He was on the front lines during the 1917 Revolution and led the Red Army to victory in the Civil War. He was received by the government of Turkey and settled on the island of Prinkipo, where he worked on finishing his autobiography and history of the Russian Revolution. In the early morning hours of May 24, 1940, a group of 20 gunmen stormed Trotskys walled compound to carry out the sentence. On July 5th grossly forged documents were published by the counter-revolutionary secret service. Trotsky likened Stalinist domination to Thermidor, the term used to denote the end of the radical phase of the French Revolution and the shift to reactionary politics. Trotsky knew that a combination of torture, threats to family members, and promises of freedom, if confessions were given, allowed the travesties to occur. There was the Red Scare in the United States in the same period. While Trotsky fought on the front lines against the White Army, Stalin busied himself on administrative tasks, such as recruitment, promotion, and gathering information on other party members. Upon Lenin's death, Stalin was officially hailed as his successor as the leader of the ruling Communist Party and of the Soviet Union itself. The task of the proletariat was to arm, to strengthen the power of the Soviets, to rouse the country districts and to prepare for the conquest of supreme power in the name of the reconstruction of society on a Socialist basis. It was the question of these military specialists former tsarist officers that defined the relationship between Stalin and Trotsky. Any thoughts of finding a sanctuary in exile had been destroyed like his bullet-riddled bedroom door when Stalinist agents stormed his villa less than three months earlier in an unsuccessful assassination attempt.
