Change, both significant and vital, will require concerted efforts and meaningful plans for implementation. One year ago, no one could have anticipated that my tenure as Grand Prytanis would coincide with the challenges of a global pandemic. Michael Hooker began to expand UMBCs aspirations at his installation as fourth chancellor in 1986 when he said, My [vision] is for UMBC to be a model university for the twenty-first century, and to be the best public university of its size in the country. Hooker argued that to capitalize on the universitys potential and make this vision a reality, the campus should: In our world, you dont only learn but you live diversity and inclusion. As we celebrate the 119th anniversary of Tau Kappa Epsilons founding, we once again have an opportunity to recall our origins and use them as inspiration for continued excellence in our lives. Since 1899, Tau Kappa Epsilon has been on an enduring journey that has appealed to the nearly 290,000 men who have joined our ranks. For the first time in a generation since 1992, our chapters and colonies initiated more than 4,000 new men. As the new year kicks off, our Fraternity is poised to capitalize on strategic growth opportunities that stem from our recent policy changes and internal accountability. We are bound to recognize that such qualities are often found in men of wealth also, and we are happy when its possible to secure such members. Here at Wake Forest, we know our heritage is complex, and we have great respect for the complexity of our past. In 1902, our medical school. Founders Day is always a significant day and I join you in paying tribute to those persons who through their own dedication and their tireless efforts brought this fraternity into being. In a real sense, you and I are the legacy of goodwill and sacrifice on the part of the founders of Tau Kappa Epsilon. It was truly the day the past met the future. On the day each of us knelt at the triangle and recited the Bond, we joined Tau Kappa Epsilon. Its transformation lay in the future during WWII, the Cold War, and the tech boom in Silicon Valley. They are as true today as they were in 1899 or in 1924. America is failing these lower-income students; we must continue to elevate not just college readiness but the work we do on campuses to ensure these students succeed when they get here. Our Founders would be proud. In order to maximize our opportunities this year, we need to overcome the challenges and limitations that we all too often impose upon ourselves. These challenges have a deleterious impact on the Fraternitys ability to sustain the momentum we have created over the last several years. At the beginning of that fateful week, I was 500 miles away from home and knew no one on campus. So who better than to convey these efforts than the words of our Founders themselves? To set a new standard for what fraternity means. It was clear that the State needed more capacity for high-achieving students. To showcase living our values of love, charity and esteem. So, six years after matriculating, 90 percent of students in the 2009 cohort had earned a postsecondary degree or were still enrolled in college. Tau Kappa Epsilon needs more Fraters to contribute those abilities and financial resources to allow TKE to be successful. More than half of the states population then lived in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Our emergence as a model research university can be traced to many factors. And, most of all, we still believe in hard work. Today is a celebration but also a convocation a calling together. Buildings were ready to be occupied; sidewalks were installed; the faculty was here. These initiatives and programs are designed to ensure that students learn and make significant progress toward completion. We are addressing health disparities in work ranging from biomedical research on diseases that affect underserved populations, to statistical modeling in public policy to understand the causes of persistent differences in health status among disadvantaged populations such as African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians, and to identify interventions to close the gaps. This Founders' Day, as I join all of you in reflecting on the history of our beloved Fraternity, now 116 years young, I continue to be awed by the innumerable accomplishments of Tau Kappa Epsilon. In fact, announcing a goal of having more active alumni than any other college fraternity by January 10, 2024, the date of our 125th anniversary. Our most successful and impactful research efforts are frequently interdisciplinary and based on successful collaborations across the campus, with other academic institutions, and with external partners. Capital Projects Fraters, in celebration of 120 years of Tau Kappa Epsilon, I ask that you all join me in a cohesive effort to embrace our values, expand our engagement, and fulfill our desire to be Better Men for a Better World. Our charitable giving has reached new heights; collegiate and alumni Tekes raised more than $300,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It takes a lifetime, however, to become Tau Kappa Epsilon, the Fraternity for Life. o We are sending our students to the most prestigious graduate and professional programs in the country and our doctoral graduates hold faculty positions at research and comprehensive universities across the nation. It was a wise bargain for a new university: commuters saved their money by living at home; the state saved money by forgoing the cost of residence halls. In 1899, a group of men living together in Bloomington, IL and attending Illinois Wesleyan University got together to form a study group. Alumni volunteers, professional staff, and collegiates have been more creative and more productive. As we mark the 124th Founders' Day in the history of our beloved Fraternity, we celebrate the 1,549 men who have officially joined the Fraternity for Life this past semester. And, at the same time, we have become more international, both in our student body and faculty and in our teaching, research, and engagement. At the same time, the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v Board of Education of Topeka and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964again under Johnsonhelped ensure that the expansion of access could be inclusive, extending beyond just whites to African Americans and other minorities. As their membership size grew, they felt that they needed to affiliate with a larger fraternity. The key point is that more students are succeeding today than ever. We can and we must do better. Our service and outreach efforts have benefitted numerous communities in desperate need of help. These challenges focus our work on carbon sequestration, improved solar energy, access to clean water, modernizing urban infrastructure, reverse engineering the brain, preventing nuclear terror, and the development of advanced personal learning.
